Dust can be dangerous, and overexposure can have a number of harmful effects on your health...

...This means having the correct filtration in your cleaning equipment is not only the law, but is imperative to prevent health complications such as:

Could You be Sucking Up a Silent Killer?

Around 39,000 people each year suffer from respiratory health issues due to inhaling dust particles.

Around 8,000 people each year in the UK alone lose their life due to cancer caused by inhaling hazardous dust particles.

To put that number into perspective: in the UK in 2023, 1,633 people were killed in road traffic accidents. Therefore, you’re almost 5 times more likely to die from harmful dust inhalation at work than you are in a car crash.

Filtration Levels

Unlike standard vacuums, HEPA rated vacuums have higher quality filters that prevent pretty much all of the dust (even the smaller dust particles) from getting through. Meaning, once you have sucked the dangerous dust up, it won't get released back into the air through the exhaust and end up in your lungs!

Below are the filter efficiencies for each dust class:

HEPA Ratings

All HEPA certified machines will have one of these symbols on to show what dust class they conform to.

L-Class: Low

> 99.9% Final Filter Efficiency
General dust, Mixed dusts, Gypsum

M-Class: Medium

> 99.9% Final Filter Efficiency
Soft/ Hard woods, Paint, Plastics, Concrete, Brick, Ceramic

H-Class: High

> 99.995% Final Filter Efficiency
Asbestos, Lead, Carbon, Tar, Formaldehyde, Mould, Bacteria, Copper, Nickle

HEPA 13 filters capture at least 99.95% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger

Commonly found in residential and commercial air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, and HVAC systems

HEPA 14 filters capture at least 99.995% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger

Typically used in specialized environments such as cleanrooms, hospitals, and laboratories where extremely clean air is required

It's the Law!

An M-Class vacuum is the legal minimum requirement advised by the HSE for vacuuming 'medium risk' hazardous dusts and is legally binding under COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).

It’s the law to use no less than an M-Class Vacuum on any construction site.
